Week 12.3

Look at the process of the student essay entitled, "Speech Doesn't Have to Be Pretty to Be Protected." I want you to describe the process that the writer took to write and compose the essay. Start on page 514 and take me through some of the major steps she took. Be specific. Please don't just give me the bold words, like on page 515. Look at her notes and tell me what she did. Then, when you eventually get to the student essay, explain to me what you learned about the writing process of an argumentative essay. What are some major points that you will use in the writing of your argumentative essay?

Answer the following questions in 2-3 paragraphs. This blog post is due by Friday at 5 pm.

  1. The first thing that the author did was circle that main point of the essay/assignment. Then she circled the differnt points that were necessary in the essay. The key points that were needed. Then she put a possible start to the thesis. Lastly, she circled the date that the essay was due. The author just made sure that the key points of the essay were known.

I learned that in order to make a strong argument, you should relate it to something personal or a news article. At the beginning of the essay, the author talked about omething recent that happened at her school. It was both big on the news and was personal for her because it happened at her school. I think that it was good to start with that because it really gets the reader a feel for why they are writing the piece. I think that my essay will need that. It also talked about different facts and history throughout the different points. I think that it is good to not just give history straight foreward, or else the reader will get tuned out. I thought that that was also good.

For the process of this essay, I think it is good to really get a full understanding of what is expected in the essay. It was nice to really understand everything that was going on within the instructions.

  2. In order to write a good essay, you should start with the brainstorming. Chris does this by reading her assigned prompt. She circles the main important parts then begins to jot down possible topics. After coming up with a few, she then circles the topic she wants to write the essay on and researches it; she finds examples that can be used in her essay. After finding information on the topic, the next step Chris took was creating her thesis and finding the points that she could argue about in order to support her thesis. Next, is writing the draft. During this time, she organizes her writing and revises as she writes.

The submitted version is the draft that Chris deems the best, for example, her thesis went from being in the first paragraph to being in her conclusion. I learned that the process takes many steps. I also learned that your thesis does not necessarily have to be in your first paragraph. If it makes your essay better then you are allowed to change the placement of the thesis.

  3. The author first began by circling the important ideas on the assignment sheet. She then wrote down ideas for topics she wanted to write about. Nguyen then chose her topic and began to find information on that topic. She found very specific examples and added a lot of detail. She continued on to write down any questions the reader may have so she could anser them by defining words or phrases.

For an argumentative essay it is important to first have an outline of ideas and information. Writing down the information in a nice, organized list can make your paper more organized and easy to write. It is also important to define any words that the reader may not know so your argument seems a lot more valid. In my argumentative essay I will definitely start with an outline to make the actual paper a little easier to write. I will also use many relatable examples and define any terms or phrases that may not be common sence.

  4. The author had to take many steps just to write a rough draft. First she had to look over the assignment and understand what the purpose and guidelines were, next she had to choose a topic and research it, then she had to write out reasons and cases she would use to back up her side, lastly, she wrote out a rough draft. Once she had the rough raft she had to revise it and go over it to see what changes she needed to make.
To have a good argumentive essay it takes more than one step. You need to brainstorm ideas and research them, also make sure you can find enough information to write your paper. To make your argument strong, use current issues so the readers know why they should care. You should also define words that aren't common so you don't lose your reader. Nguyen used a personal issue that happened at her school, this was good because it was a current event, affected her, and it was on the news so it was a big issue. In using this examples it lets readers know why they should take the time to care about her topic.

The author took a lot of steps to write a rough draft. First she tries to understand the guidelines, then she finds a topic and researches it, and finally she writes her rough draft.
To have a good essay, the author makes it a point to find a controversy that has affected you personally. This makes the essay more personable and can reach people rather than just be a lecture on a certain topic. In addition she shows the importance of clearly defining her points and giving the reader enough background info on both sides before even allowing room for them to choose a topic.

  6. The author took many steps in writing the draft such as, pointing out the main ideas of the assignment and then coming up with a few topics that she could write about. After she chose a topic, she found more information about it to get specific details and examples. Then, she came up with her reasons/main points for backing up her view on the topic. Once she actually started to write her draft, she organized it and revised it as she went.

From reading the final essay, I learned that it takes many steps to write an argumentative essay. No one gets it perfect on their first draft. Also, by using current events that are relateable to a large amount of people, it can make your essay likeable and it shows the reader why they should care about your topic. Similar to the author of this essay, I will make an outline of everything that I need for my essay. Then, I will be more prepared for when I actually start to make a rough draft.

  8. The first thing Nguyen did was mark the important details on her assignment sheet, such as the due date. Then she went through a list of topics that she might be interested in writing about. After that, she started to brainstorm using webs and lists to get her main ideas, examples, and arguments down on paper. After brainstorming and revision she was able to write her final draft.

After reading Nguyen’s final draft I learned that a lot of preparation as well as revision goes into writing an argumentative essay. It is important to use good examples to back up your argument and make it strong so that your audience believes you are credible and passionate about what you are writing about. When I write my argumentative essay I am going make sure I have a detailed outline next to me when I begin writing. As well, I feel it is important to understand my topic fully and be knowledgeable about why I am arguing the point I am.

  9. The author spent time on analyzing what exactly the assignment said to do and then finds a topic that is not only controversial, but also is personable. She finds background on the topic she picked. From this information, the author made an outline and formed a thesis statement. Then she wrote a draft and made sure to go over and revise it.

To have a good essay, the author makes it a point to find a controversy that has affected you personally. Doing this makes the audience able to relate to the topic easier and be interested in reading the essay. Providing enough background is also important to allowing the reader to fully understanding the topic. I will make sure to find background that will help the reader as well as making my controversy relate able so it is important to those who normally wouldn't care.

  10. The author took many steps just to write a rough draft. She had to understand what the purpose was. She had to go through all the steps and brain storm the way she is going to organize. Having background on the subject helped her in her rough draft. When she finished her draft she had to fix and revise it.

Writting a good argumentive essay takes more than a rough draft. You need to brainstorm ideas and research them. You have to express why you care about the topic so others will read your essay. On the other hand explaining things that readers wont know is useful. It works well that she has some contact with the issue. She can pull things out of her own life to convey her message.

  11. While writing her argumentative essay she went through what was being asked of her so that she would know exactly what she was supposed to do, while reading through the assignment and circled the main points of what she was supposed to have and do in this essay. This allow there to be no confusion while she was writing. Then she started thinking about what her topic could be, once she chose one of those she then took notes on the issue, which will become the details for her essay, finally she made a list of the key term which will become her three reasons for her essay to support what she is talking about in her thesis. After figuring out all of her details for her paper she started on her thesis, in her thesis she would use the points that she already found. Finally, she started planning and writing her draft. After finishing her draft she revises her draft multiple times to make it better then she will have her final draft.

After seeing everything that Chris went through while writing her paper made me think about what I could change about my process of writing this essay. One area that I think that I need to change and think more about while writing my essay would be the preparation. I think that I need to set out more what I am going to write about before I start writing. These I think will make my paper better because it will be more organized and follow my outline better. By reading this it made me think that there is more than just one step to having a good argumentative essay there are many steps that make it a good essay.

  12. For this essay, the author began by taking note of important information that was needed. For example, she circled what the essay needed to be about, as well as what was needed in order for the essay to be effective. She specifically noted what terms needed to be explained in the writing. She then began brainstorming topics, and chose one that she had enough information and support for. Next, the author began researching her topic further, and came to find, though her research of Supreme Court cases, a stance and a strong thesis for her argument. She also found, through her research, what the core of her paper would contain, and then mapped her ideas. Her map was then turned into an outline and then a rough draft soon after. After several revisions and peer editing on her original draft, she had her final version.

After reviewing the steps for writing an argumentative essay, I found it to be a long process that begins with the writer effectively researching a topic. This research is necessary for the author’s argument to have adequate support. This has taught me the importance of making a strong outline before writing the rough draft. I also plan on using her map. For an essay, I’ve never made a map. Maybe by doing this in the early stages of my paper, I can make my essay more effective.

  13. The author did a good job at analyzing the assignment and brainstorming a list of ideas that she would be interesting in writing about. Then the author decided on a topic that was both personal and controversial. She then starts her research on background information and chooses the points she would like to argue.

After she is able to write a first draft, revise it, and then form the final draft.
While looking at her process of writing her final draft I learned that there are many steps that go into putting a final draft together. It is not just a one shot deal where you turn in the first thing you write. I also learned that your thesis statement does not have to be in the beginning of your essay. Also, it is important to define any terms that are used about your topic that you have in your essay that the readers won’t know. When I write my essay I will definitely start with an outline and a rough draft before writing the final draft.
