1. What are some of the major differences between reading her speech versus actually seeing her give the speech?
2. Has seeing her changed how you feel towards the issue she is discussing?
3. Does seeing her add to her ethos (credibility)? Does it add to her pathos (emotional appeal)? Why or why not? If yes, how?
4. Which would you prefer if you were interested in this issue? The speech or the speech written on paper? Why?
After watching Marie Fatayi-Williams give her speech, You can see the true emotion that she was trying to demonstrate. It makes you feel so much sympathy and you feel for both her and the rest of her son's family. The speech makes you want to figure out what the end of the story is. It also adds ethos because you can truly believe everything that she is saying because she is on the news--since it is on the news it MUST be true. Seeing her talk also adds to her pathos because you can see the hurt in her eyes and the broken heart she is having to deal with--it is a very sad story. If i was interested in the issue I would prefer the speech to know the story first, that way, I can get a feel for what she is going through. Then I would want the words in front of me. Listening to the speech first would allow me to replay her actual speech in my head.
ReplyDeleteIn Maires voice you could hear the sadness, and hear the emotions she was feeling. It didn't change my view much, because when reading the speach i could hear the sadness and the emotions she was displaying with her words.I knew from reading the speach that she was worried about her son and was looking for an answer. I would prefer the speach on paper because you can go back and read it again and she was kinda hard to understand at points because her emotions got to her.
ReplyDeleteThe major difference of reading the speach and listening to it is that you can actually feel the deep emotion this woman is feeling. It is obvious listening to her that she is desperate to find the truth of what happened to her son. Seeing her hasn't really changed my view of what she is discussing because it made me sad both reading and listening to her speach. Listening to the speach definitely adds to her ethos and pathos because I could feel the emotion as she read her speach. I would prefer listening to the speach because it causes more emotions and can be more relatable when seeing how the bombing effected her.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between watching the speech and reading the speech is that the audience actually gets to hear what is going on, they give you background on the topic instead of expecting you to know what happened. While listening to the speech you can hear the sadness in her voice, you can tell that talking about her son is really hard because she has a hard time talking without crying. By listening to the speech it made me feel more for her because I could see the sadness not just assume there is sadness in her voice. I think that the speech has about the same ethos and pathos but when you hear her speech you just can hear the emotion. I prefer hearing the speech because I feel like I get more out of things when I hear them not read them.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching Marie give her speech. You can see the emotion that she was being demonstrated. It makes the reader feel so much sympathy and you feel for both her and her son. The speech makes you want to figure out what the end of the story is. It also adds ethos because you can truly believe everything that she is saying because she is on the news. If i was interested I would want know the story first. Listening to the speech would allow me to replay it in my mind.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the speech you can really see the sadness and emotions that she felt. If makes the reader feel a lot more simpathetic for both her and her son. The speech that she gives made me want to see what the end of the story turned out to be. It is mainly ethos because you can believe what she is saying and see her emotions. If I was intrested in this topic I would want the paper, so that I could have a hard copy of what was said.
ReplyDeleteThe major difference between reading and seeing Marie give her speech is the truth of the emotion she is feeling. By hearing her actually speaking the words I have previously read it gave them a lot more power. Seeing her and how passionate and emotional she was when giving the speech allowed me to connect better with her and understand her words easier. I think seeing her does add to both ethos and pathos because you are viewing her as the mother/victim she is and what she is going through and how hard it is on her emotionally. I prefer the speech because it is very poignant and allows me to understand the crisis from Marie’s personal point of view.
ReplyDeleteI felt like there was a major difference between watching and hearing Marie speak and reading it. When you read it, you felt bad but could not really see or feel the entire emotion Marie displayed while reading her speach. Her voice was so strong and powerful and her words were something that everybody heard. I feel like the emotions I felt toward her while watching her speak was more powerful than just reading it. I was almost told how to feel when reading the speech because of the report that was before the speech. Therefore, I prefer watching the speech and hearing her speak rather than just reading it.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the speech I could see her hurting inside. Her voice moved me in the fact that her voice was powerful. I give her more ethos because it actually happened to her. It was her son that it happened to. The pathos is also more emotional because she is actually talking and you can see the emotion as well as hear her voice not mine. I would prefer the speech because its stronger and more staight forward on actually feeling her emotion.
ReplyDelete1.Seeing her give the speech was much more powerful, you could see the pain in her eyes and hear the sadness in her voice. But when we just read the essay we don’t truly know what the women is going through. We just read it, not really knowing how terribly sad it is.
ReplyDelete2.I feel the same about the issues but seeing her give the speech made it more powerful and I agree with it more. She was able to pull at my heart strings making me feel more powerful about the issue.
3.Seeing her adds to both her ethos and her pathos. She had so much emotion in her voice that when you heard it, it defiantly made it have a stronger emotional appeal.
4.I would prefer the speech, because you understand more of what she is going through when you can actually hear her sadness, and you know the issue is very serious.
Some of the major differences between reading the speech and hearing her give it is that you could actual hear the sadness in her voice to go with the sad words. No seeing her has not changed how I feel towards the issue she is discussing. Seeing the speech does not add to her ethos since it does not suddenly make her an expert of the subject. The speech does add to her pathos since you could actual hear the sadness in her voice instead of just thinking she is sad you know she is sad. I would prefer the speech written on paper since you got more of the speech since in the video you only got clips of the speech the rest was news.

When she is giving her speech, you can hear the worry in her voice and you can tell she is almost yelling her words, but in the written speech you can only guess the emotions that she has. Seeing her give the speech makes me feel even more sorrow for her because you can see the bus that blew up and if her son was on that bus you can tell he didn't make it. Seeing the speech does add ethos and pathos because you can see she is holding a picture of her son during her whole speech. It shows that she is a caring mother and a victim of terrorism. You can hear the sadness in her voice and hearing that made me feel sadness also because all she is trying to do is find her son. I prefer to hear the speech rather than read it on paper because then you understand the emotions that the mother has and it adds more power.
ReplyDeleteActually seeing her give this speech would make a huge difference. You can't hear the emotion in her voice and on her face. You can't see her movements, hand gestures. Reading it is still good because you can picture the emotion in the words. It may not be the same emotion the speaker had though. Its like listening to a comedian and then seeing a comedian live. They're still funny when you hear them, but actually watching them is a whole different experience. I dont think seeing her picture made a huge difference to me. I can put a face with the words, but the picture only gave the one emotion, she had many in her speech. I'd much rather see the speech. It would be more powerful.
ReplyDeleteWhen seeing the person acutally giving the speech it makes a difference than just reading it. In the video you can see and hear her emotions, facial expressions, and actoins. Reading the speech is good too because it forces you to imagine and paint a picture in your mind on how the person looks while giving their speech. Ethos and pathos are shown while watching her give the speech, she is holding a picture of her son while talking. When watching the speech I feel more for her because I can see her emotion and its not the same when you are just reading it. I would prefer to listen and see the speech rather than read it. It is more powerful and makes you think.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between seeing/hearing the speech compared to just reading the speech is big. Actually seeing and hearing the speech makes you feel more sympathy and get a better sense of the emotions that the mother is experiencing. The mother is experiencing sadness and confusion and those emotions are expressed in her voice and expressions. Seeing the speech did not actually make a big difference in how I view the issue because I felt the same emotions and could imagine the expressions through the voice and word choice in reading the speech. Seeing the speech adds to pathos because you see her in pain and sadness and it is just so much more powerful seeing and hearing the speech rather than just reading it. The ethos does not really change except you get to hear how great of a speaker she is and how her story is upsetting. I personally like hearing and seeing the speech compared to reading it, but they both have their benefits. Reading the speech can only give you so much and then you fill in what you do not know. By seeing the speech you do not have to fill in any blanks, you see the real thing and know exactly how the mother is feeling.
ReplyDeleteReading the essay does not measure up to actually seeing and hearing her give the speech. The tone of her voice, the expressions on her face, and the body language she shows all conribute to her message. Seeing her definitely makes me think about more about what she's saying, there's more feeling behind her speech. It adds to her ethos and pathos. With ethos she gains respect and authority sense the tragedy actually happened to her, people will think that she is worth listening to. With pathos, she clearly reveals emotion which helps people become more sympathetic and sensitive to her situation. People then start listening to what she has to say. I'd rather see the original speech because a very small percentage of communication involves just words. Without body language or the tone of voice, the speech wouldn't be as effectve and powerful.
ReplyDeleteSome major difference between reading the speech and hearing the speech is you can hear the emotion given off by the mother when she is speaking. She is so distraught and the message seems so much deeper. I pictured her saying it more slowly as though she were waiting patiently for him to return again, however she seemed more upset and unable to cope with the matter. Seeing her does not change the outlook on the message she is trying to portray. If I were more interested in the issue I would choose to watch the recording of the mother talking, because I could feel closer to her by seeing the emotion on her face and feeling of want in her voice. It makes it seem more real than just text in a book.
ReplyDeleteIn reading the speech there is not nearly the emotion as there is in hearing it. The tone in voice and infliction of her speech make it much more meaningful. The message is much more powerful when hearing the speech rather than just reading it. I'd rather hear the mother give the speech than read it because I can more clearly understand her emotion.
ReplyDeleteWhen watching Marie's speech, I saw the distress and sadness that she was feeling, something that I thought was missing in the writing. Seeing her speak definitely adds to her pathos, because you can see her fear and sadness. Seeing her also adds to her ethos because you can see her at the scene. If I were interested in this subject, I would rather read it on paper, because it is easier to understand.
