Week 8.1

Hopefully you've enjoyed constructing your informative essays. If you missed class today, we went over the next assignment sheet - the Analysis Essay.

Tell me about your experience writing the informative essay. What do you think you did well? What do you think you need to still work on? If you could go back and change one thing about your essay, what would it be? What has the informative essay taught you as a writer? How can you see yourself using this essay in the future?

As I read these essays for the next week or so, I hope they send me into a blissful trance - almost to the point of defying gravity. I know it was a tough assignment, but I'm glad you all made it to the end.

  1. I thought I did ok on my informative essay, definately not my best work. It was hard for me because you have to keep opinion out, I found myself wanting to comment on things and couldn't. I think my conclusion could have been better and stronger. If I could go back and change something it would be my topic. I would pick a topic that had more issues to address. My informative essay was good practice for my anaylsis because you can't put your opinion in it either.

  2. I think that I did alright on my informative essay, but if I spent more time on it, I know that I would have done so much better. As I took my essay out to turn it in, I realized I did my in-text citations wrong on two of them, but I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to turn it in on time after fixing it. I think that I did well on finding good information to use in my essay. I didn't have to "b.s." anything in order to fill my paper because I found so many details to use.
I don't think I'll use this essay again because the topic I did was more just for fun. I thought finding out why we lie naturally would be interesting to research.

  3. I think my essay was alright, but I couldve done a lot more to make it better. I never really get into essays that arent written from my head. If I have to do research for the majority of it, I feel like its not authentic. My first body paragraph was good, but the transition to the next was kind of weak. I dont see myself doing much with this in the future since there are no beaches in colorado.

  4. I didn't have a very hard time writing the informative essay. It was just about stating important information about the topic that you chose, not talking about your opinion. That was the thing that I had the biggest problem with though. If I could change one thing about my essay it would be to sound less opinionated even though I tried not to be. For the future, I am going to show my parents the informative, analyses, and argumentative essays that I write to show them I know everything that is involved with getting body art done. With these essays I hope to prove to them that if I am responsible enough to become informed about every aspect of getting a tattoo that I should be allowed to get one.

  5. I thought I did okay on my informative essay. It was really hard not putting my own opinion in it. I felt like I got good facts, and quotes. But I don't know if I cited them correctly. I think that my introduction was really strong. If I could change one thing it would be the way in which I portrayed the information. I don't think I will do much informative essay writing in the future, but I will need to know about teachers pay

  6. It was tough righting the informative essay. I had to find a lot of information then be able to organize it in a way that made sence. It was also difficult to make my essay have good transitions. I think I did well defining terms that most people may not know what they mean. I need to work on a stronger conclusion. I tend to just throw something together at the end because I'm tired of writing. Writing this essay has taught me to really think about how to make my writing flow from one paragraph to another. I think it will definitely benifit me in the future because I did write it.

  7. I think that the informative essay was a learning experience for me. After going through peer review and reading my paper out loud it helped me realize that I repeat certain words and that I had some of my information repeated more than once. That helped me realize what all I needed to change about my paper. If I could go back and change something about my paper I would make my conclusion better, I thought that it could have been longer and that I could make it stronger. In the future I will use this paper as and example of what to do and what not to do, I think that it will help me with the analysis essay because I will have to watch what I say to make sure that I am not repeating things multiple times in my paper.

  8. It was really tough writing my informative essay. I had a ton of information and quotes but I felt like my paper was just all information and not really my own thoughts. I think I did well on stating my sources. I could have worked on my transitions in my paper a little more and made my paper longer than just the minimum page requirement. Writing this essay taught me a lot about how to make my writing flow together from begining to end. I think that i really won't use this other than to finish school.

  9. I felt I did pretty good on the informative essay. I feel confident that I followed the instructions correctly and organized the essay well. However, what was challenging for me was keeping the essay strictly informative and making sure not to sound biased in any way. If I could go back and change one thing it would be to critique my conclusion a bit because I felt it wasn’t quite as strong as it could have been. The informative essay has taught me to become less opinionated based in my writing because that might not always be the best thing to write about. I can see myself using this essay to help me with the next two essays in the class, but probably not for anything else in the future.

  10. Writing my informative essay was challenging for me. I feel like I did do well researching my information and I did site my sources and had my works cited page. But I had a problem trying to make my essay strictly infirmative, and not put my opinion into it. With the topic that I chose, I had a hard time keeping it interesting and fun to read. I kinda wish that I had chosen another topic for my essay so that it would have been more intersting. I am still considering changing it for the argumentative essay. If I could change one thing, I would change the topic of what I was writing about.

  11. I felt like I did good on the informative. I thought it was easy because it just alot of information. I think I did well on comparing statistics between Africa and the U.S. I think I could have done better on my MLA but, its only a few erorrs I think I made. I would go back and make my transitions better. It just taught me how to organize information. I can see myself writting this kind of paper again because it wasnt that bad. Its going to help in the future with any essay with information.

  12. Personally, I found the Informitive Essay overwhelming, because I should have probably down-sized it. I made it twice as hard as was necessary, by writing eight pages, and I only have myself to blame for this. There was a quote in one of the paragraphs that needed to be re-worked again, and probably punctuation mistakes that needed to be fixed, but I think I did a good job with the material and layout. The experience of writing this kind of essay has given me a greater respect, for the work involved in producing one. However, since I did not enjoy the assignment, I would prefer not to go through the trials, and tribulations of producing another one, now, or in the future.

  13. The informative essay was interesting to write, there was not a lot of creativity that needed to be used and at time is seemed dry. It was not hard to write because I had all the information, but I do think it was a little harder to organize the paper. I think I did okay but not too great, my thesis was not very strong. If I could take change one thing about the essay I would work on the introduction paper, and make the thesis stronger. As a writer the informative essay taught me that it is a good idea to have an outline and that way I can be more organized. Being organized is important for any essay. In the future I would use this essay to write my analysis essay.

  14. I was not particularly satisfied with my informative essay, it ended up being significantly more difficult than I had anticipated. However, I believe I met all of the structural requirements for the essay. I feel like I could have transitioned better between subjects. If I could change one thing about my essay, I would have spent more time on relating different areas of the essay. I learned that a lot of my essays rely on opinions based on facts, so I should focus more on allowing the facts to stand on their own. This essay will certainly be helpful for the rest of this class, and it may be helpful on future assignments for classes focused on my major.

  15. I think I did an okay job on the informative essay, though it could have been better. I think I did well keeping my opinion out of my work. I could have tried to find more information about how the A- bombs and The Manhattan Project functioned. If I could change anything about my essay it would be to make my conclusion a stronger one. It has taught me as a writer to give myself more time to work on the paper since sometimes it could be hard to find information on some subjects. I could see myself using this essay for the analysis essay and for the argumentative essay that we have do later in the class.

  16. This essay was definitely tougher than the reflection essay. I think my main weakness was picking a topic that doesn't have many resources availible to it. I couln't find one book that gave information. I have also accumulated about 5 or 6 different ways to do citations. It seems i have to relearn it every year. I hope this essay would prevent me from completing the next two in the same manner. I want to be more prepared for the others.

  17. I struggled with writing my informative essay because I kept putting mu opinion in it. I guess it was unconscious way of trying to make the paper easier and more interesting to read. I had good information, but could have made it less biased. I also could have spent more time on it to find my mistakes and fix them. I also struggled with making sure everything was cited correctly. I am going to change my topic for my argumentative essay but from writing the informative I have learned how challenging it can be. Therefore this essay won't help me with the topic of my other essays in the future, but I can still use this essay as a learning experience and just make sure not to make the same mistakes in the future.

  18. I thought I wrote the informative essay pretty well. My transitions were decent. It was a little bit difficult to write my essay, I've always had trouble with informative essays. I thought my topic was going to be interesting, but it ended up being somewhat boring. The information I found was repetitive and I couldn't figure out what else I could write about. Citing my sources was difficult too, I wasn't sure if I did them corretly. Plus, I always somehow put in my thoughts and opinions into my writing, so hopefully my writing was objective.

  19. I thought the informative essay was a tough assignment. I think I did a good job writing it but struggled a little with my sources. I had a lot of good information in my essay.I thought my topic was interesting and not boring. I think i might have messed up on citing my sources, it was difficult. It was a good exerience so i have the information on how to cite my sources and all of that for future essays.

  20. Writing the informative essay was tough. Each statement had to be clearly planned out so that it was as unbiased as possible. I think I did the organization well. I knew what points I needed to go where to have the essay make sense. However, I believe I can work on adding more information to the essay to make sure the content is completely formed. I would not change much about the essay because I really enjoyed learning more about my topic.

  21. I found in writing my informative essay that once I got started it was not very hard. I have a solid knowledge of my topic and was able to incorporate my own experiences. I had a little trouble making sure it was three pages and I also had to reorganize a little bit. I f I could change anything it might be my topic, I think another topic could have been more interesting.

  22. All in all, writing the informative essay was a great exercise for me. I taught me how to write an essay that informs the reader, rather than persuading them. Looking back, I think my essay was okay. If I could go back and change one thing, I think I would’ve rewritten my conclusion. I don’t think that it was as strong as it could’ve been. By being forced to keep my personal opinions out of this writing, I learned how to rely more on facts and quotes to support my main points. I’m not sure if I’ll ever write this kind of essay in the future; however, I feel that this assignment was great practice if I ever have to.
