Week 5.1

Today was a library day. We had a great lecturer talk to us about the library and some of the tools for conducting good research - research beyond just Google. Answer the following questions in one paragraph. A paragraph is 4-6 coherent sentences.

1. Discuss two things you learned from your library orientation. What do you now know about the library that you didn't before today?
2. Why do you think we went to the library for an orientation? Why should students know how to use the library? Why does the library offer orientations for instructors and students?

  2. Today during the library orientation I learned how to use a ebook as well as how to locate a book in the huge library. I have never used an ebook. Mitchner library is intimidating so it's good to know the basics of finding a book. I think we went to the library orientation so we know how to find a book if we need some kind of resource for a paper or class. Students should know the library so they can use the resources they are provided. Library offers orientation because it is a big, confusing place and they want students to be able to use the resources.

I think we went to the library so we could learn how to find resources for our research paper,so we can use more source than google and yahoo. Students should know how to use the library because its free and avaiable so we should use it to our advantage. The library offers orientations to teach students how to use the library more effectively.

  4. I learned that someone gets paid to sit on a computer and IM students all day. Although the same time its very easy and convenient for students who need quick help. Also that the UNC homepage has a lot of tabs that can be useful for certain classes/topics. Students should know how to use the library because that where most of the information is. They offer it so that students get to know the system as good as instructors do, so they wont always have to rely on someone else

  5. From going to the library, I learned that you can actually talk through your computer with a librarian and you can use ebook through their website so you don't even have to go to the library. I think we went to the library so we would be prepared to find resources for our next paper. The lecturer gave us information about the libraries website, which provides many different sources of information. The library offers orientations so that everyone that comes into the library or uses their website can be able to find what they need on their own.

  6. We talked about many things during the library orientation day. I learned a couple things that I would have never known if our class had not gone to the library. If you cant find a book that you need at this library then you can have one shipped here for you from one of the other libraries on the list. I also learned about where you find certain books and that you can find government documents in the library. I think that we went to the library so that we all will know that the Internet is not the only source that we should be using when we write our next paper. The orientation really helped to inform students about what is really available for us in this huge library.

  7. I learned that you could talk to a librarian online through an instant messaging program. This would be helpful when students don't have time to actually go into the library to ask them a question. Since we are in a class that requires research at times for papers, we went to the library to learn about the types of resources it has to offer. Also, after learning about how the website works, it makes it easier for us to find books on specific topics.

  8. I learned how to find books on prospector if the unc libraries do not have the book your looking for. I also learned that a librarian can get a book for you if your busy so you can pick it up at the front desk. If you have a question you can IM an librarian for answers. I think we went to the library to learn about all the resources available to students. Also to help us find accurate sourses for our next three papers. The lecure gave us an idea on how to use and find recourses. The library offers oreintations to inform students about all the different ways a library can be used.

  9. 1.I learned a lot about how to find different resources and things located on the source page. It can take me to whatever I need to know. I also learned about different ways I can put in my dey works to ensure I find the result I am looking for.
    2. The library is very important as a student. It has so much information and things that you can go to to help with any project or assignment. It also helps get more aquainted with the school if you know about the different places around the campus so that you know where to go and how you would find information.

  10. Today during library orientation I learned how to get help from a librarian online through IM and also learned how to narrow your search down to find a book on the topic you are researching. I think we went to the library for orientation to show us the amount of resources we have other than just using the internet. I think it is important for students to know how to use the library because it has a great amount of resources that can be helpful to us throughout college. The library offers orientation for students and instructors because they want us to be able to use their resources and know how to find them.

  11. At the library I learned many useful things, among which were how to find an ebook and get a book from a different library if it is checked out from Mitchner. I have never used an ebook, but now I am aware of how to locate them and that only one person can view them at a time. As well, I now know that “Prospector” can help me get a book from another library in Colorado if it isn’t available on this campus. I believe we went to the library orientation because we are starting our informative essay and will need to know how to use the facility to help us with research. It is important for students to know how to use the library because the internet is not the only information tool in the world, plus books can often times be more reliable or substantial. I think the library offers orientations because it wants everyone to be able to use and understand how the library works because it is a great resource open to anyone.

  12. I learned that the library has many useful things such as the instant messaging system where a librarian can help you find what you need. I also learned that there is a search engine to find books easier in the library. I think we went to the library to get more comfortable with everything that goes on there and how to use things such as the internet as a tool to help us find what we need. I also think that is another reason why they hold orientations so that we can get some sort of comfort level.

  13. Two things I learned from the library visit were how to find books and where they will be in the library. I also I learned how to get E-books. E-books are the books that are online. I think it is very important to go to the library for orientation because students need to know how to use the library and they have to be comfortable with the library in order to use it. I think orientation was very informational and helpful. The library offers orientation to give students and instructor’s information so when in the library or on the library home page it is easier to know what to do.

    1. I never knew that we are allowed to access books online as e-books. That saves me a strenuous 58 foot walk over to the library now. But on a more serious note, it is definitely handy that we can do that because there's no due date or return fee or anything. Its just kind of nice to have that.
    2. The library can definitely be a useful resource if someone chooses to go. I personally like it because it is a quiet environment where i can get a lot of studying done. It can also save you money. I was amazed when I walked in there and found free Blu Ray DVDs! So instead of spending money at Red Box, you can get free dvds. This was definitely exciting.

  15. The orientation at the Mithner Library provides both, students and teachers, an opportunity to become familiar with the different types of resources that are available. Knowing how to use these resources, gives students access to a wealth of information. Information that is needed to properly write college research papers. We went to the library, so that we would be able to take advantage of these resources for our next three essays, which require citations from different resources. I learned from our orientation speaker, Maggie, that the library has a computer site called, The Source, which gives access to the library's entire catalog. I also learned, that the Source provides E-books. Although I have gone to this library to study, I have never taken the time to discover their resources. The Mitchner Library will certainly be a greater asset than, "Google," for our future essays.

  16. I learned how to use the library catalog. It was helpful information to know how to use it when looking for materials in and out of the library. I also found out that UNC has more than one library, one for the music section and one for everything else. I think we went to the library because it helped us get a little bit more involved. Some students will not always go to a library as a source of information since everything is now online.

  17. From the orientation, i leaned about The Source and prospector. I think both are going to be valuable tools for school work. I didnt know how accessible the library was from the internet. It seems almost any service you can get inside the library you can also get online. The library is important for students. Students need to know how to use their resources, so instruction is availible for classes. Also, if a teacher assigns a project in which the students needs printed resources, the library is the place to get those. Therefore it is important to know how to get those resources from the library.

  18. The library orientation was very helpful. Personally, I found the information on Prospector, it sounds like a helpful tool if you need a book right away. I also found the information on what floors certain information is located on helpful, and I would imagine it would be timesaving in the future. I would guess that we went to the library because we are about to start the first of our research-oriented papers for this class, so being able to use the library will be an important skill. Students should know how to use the library because it provides a variety of sources, many of which are more reliable than what can be found on the internet. The library offers orientations for instructors and students because it is a large library with many tools available, so an orientation would probably help many students take full advantage of it.

  19. In the library orientation we were taught how to use different words to search for book on the catalog if are first search does not turn up anything. We learned that you can find more books with the same subject as a book we like by clicking on a subject link. We also learned that you can have a book shipped to you from a different library if the book you want is not available at ours. I learned two new thing that I did not know before the orientation that I do now they are that is that you can find out which floor a book is on by green slips of papers and that you can instant message the librarians. We went to the library to find out what the library has to offer us in are college careers and to techs that we have more way to research then the internet. The library offered these orientations to students and teachers to teach them the resources that are available to us all teacher and student alike.

  20. During our class trip to the library, I became aware of useful information and websites that will help me in the future. First, I learned how and where to find particular books. This helped a lot, because the library is so huge! I also learned more about Prospector, a database for thirteen libraries in Colorado. This is important because if I can’t find a book or resource in the library, I now know where else to look.
The library is a very useful and vital resource for students. Therefore, it is extremely important that a student know how to use its database and catalogue. The library offers these orientations so students can use these various resources quickly and easily. The library’s resources can come in handy in the future, particularly for our informative essay.

  21. At the library orientation I learned that librarians are very helpful and that the library is a helpful place. Librarians help you find books and can even help you over IM. If you do not want to come to the library to find books yourself, librarians can pull books from the shelf for you. We went to the library because we will be doing research on our next essays and need to know what resources are available to us.
